The UK government has confirmed a 25% increase in license fees for most gambling operators, effective October 1, 2026. The additional revenue will support the operations of the UK Gambling Commission.
Scope and Exemptions
The fee hike applies to annual license charges, personal and supplementary licenses, and machine permits. It also covers license amendments and changes in corporate control. Charity lotteries are exempt from the price change.
Bookmakers will face a new fee structure calculated based on Gross Gaming Yield. Operators with annual GGY exceeding £1.6 billion will pay the maximum rate. Industry representatives have expressed opposition, citing already high operational costs.
Government officials maintain that license fees represent a minor portion of operator revenue and will not critically impact the market.
