The Malta Ranger Unit continues its operations to monitor environmental violations across the Maltese islands. The non-governmental organization, which officially launched in 2023, relies on a small team of full-time rangers and administrative staff.
The organization operates entirely on donations and sponsor funds. The current roster includes full-time patrolling rangers and one administrator who also assists with field duties. The unit aims to recruit additional volunteers to support these efforts.
A recent grant from the Malta Environment Foundation allowed the group to purchase a new patrol vehicle.
Collaboration with Authorities
The Malta Ranger Unit holds no independent policing or enforcement powers. Instead, the group supports the Environmental Protection Unit of the Malta Police Force and more than ten other relevant authorities. Rangers monitor specific violations, including illegal littering, waste burning, fishing, poaching, and construction within protected zones such as Natura 2000 areas.
Staff members create detailed case files containing geo-location data and statistical information to assist in police prosecutions. The organization faces logistical challenges, particularly on Gozo, where no Environmental Protection Unit officers are currently stationed. The unit also focuses on monitoring unregistered waste carriers and various forms of pollution.
