Craig Williams and Amy Hind Plead Guilty in Election Betting Scandal

Craig Williams and Amy Hind pleaded guilty to cheating offences on Monday regarding the UK election betting investigation. The Gambling Commission reported the convictions as part of a probe into insider trading on the 2024 general election date.

Investigation Details and Sentencing

Williams, the former parliamentary private secretary to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and MP for Montgomeryshire, admitted to violating section 42(1)(a) of the Gambling Act 2005. He placed a £100 wager on the Ladbrokes platform predicting a July election date shortly before the announcement. The operator flagged the transaction because Williams was classified as a politically exposed person requiring enhanced due diligence.

Amy Hind, employed as a business support manager at the NHS, also entered a guilty plea. The regulator noted that Hind utilized confidential information regarding the election timing passed to her through her husband, Anthony Hind, who works for the Conservative Party. The Gambling Commission stated: "As a result of his privileged position Craig Williams attended various meetings with the prime minister and senior staff at Conservative Central Headquarters during which the date of the general election was discussed."

Both defendants face a potential fine or imprisonment of up to two years, with sentencing scheduled for a later date at Southwark Crown Court. The remaining 12 defendants, including former police officer Jeremy Hunt and Simon Chatfield, are scheduled for trial in September 2027 and January 2028.
