On Friday, April 26, 2024, 90 volunteers from 13 iGaming companies gathered at Ghadira Bay to clean the beach and nature reserve. The event, organized as part of Earth Day 2024 celebrations, resulted in the removal of 700 kilograms of waste.
Collaborative Cleanup Operations
The initiative was a joint effort between the iGaming sector, Nature Trust Malta, and Birdlife Malta. Volunteers from Aspire Global, Bet365, Betsson, Betway, Bragg, Casumo, EveryMatrix, Games Global, Glitnor, Kindred, UniBet, 888/William Hill, and 1GameChanger Studio participated. The event was originally scheduled for April 19 but was rescheduled due to gale-force winds.
The group established a base camp near Sundancer Kiosk, starting operations at 15:00.
Operations were divided into two phases. Under the direction of Angelique Lofaro from Nature Trust, a team conducted a litter density investigation on a 100m by 20m beach section. Volunteers sorted and cataloged every object for EU research databases.
Sorting tables were managed by Rob Jones, Natasha Jones, Tijana, and Hayley Acreman.
The second phase involved a traditional cleanup of the remaining beach areas and the boundaries of the Ghadira and Foresta 2000 reserves. Volunteers cleared plastic, glass, wood, and metal from the vegetation along the coast road. Some teams entered the reserve under the supervision of the Malta Ranger Unit to clear trash from trees without disturbing nesting birds.
All collected waste was weighed at designated collection points.
